Progesterone test in Banur

Most doctors call it the "day 21" test, but that name only fits a 28-day cycle. The progesterone test is meant to be taken about seven days before your next period is due, which is when the level peaks after ovulation. Getting that day right is most of the preparation.

What the Progesterone test checks

After an egg is released, the empty follicle turns into the corpus luteum and starts making progesterone. This hormone thickens and steadies the lining of the womb, ready for a pregnancy. If no pregnancy happens, progesterone falls and the period starts. In early pregnancy the corpus luteum keeps making it until the placenta takes over. The lab measures progesterone in serum, in ng/mL.

Why your doctor may order it

  • To check whether ovulation happened in a cycle, often while trying to conceive.
  • To see if ovulation-inducing medicine is working.
  • In early pregnancy, when there's bleeding or a history of miscarriage, sometimes with a beta hCG test.
  • Occasionally in adrenal conditions or before certain fertility procedures.

How to prepare

No fasting. Work out the day from your usual cycle length:

  • 28-day cycle: day 21.
  • 35-day cycle: about day 28.
  • 25-day cycle: about day 18.

If your cycles vary a lot, your doctor may ask for more than one sample. Progesterone tablets, pessaries or injections used in fertility treatment or pregnancy raise the result, so tell us exactly what you're using and when you last took it. Keep taking them as prescribed. Biotin supplements can upset the assay; mention them too.

Sample type and report time

A single serum sample. Reports are usually ready the same day or next day. For anyone after a progesterone test near me in Banur, walk in from 7:00 am or book home sample collection for the right day.

Understanding your results

In the follicular phase progesterone is low. After ovulation it rises clearly. Many labs and clinics treat a mid-luteal level above about 3 ng/mL as a sign that ovulation took place, and some prefer higher cut-offs; the range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method.

A low mid-luteal result may mean ovulation didn't happen that cycle, or simply that the sample was taken on the wrong day. In early pregnancy, a low level may prompt the doctor to look more closely, but it isn't a diagnosis on its own. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.

FAQ

My cycle is 32 days. When should I come?

Count back seven days from when you expect your next period. For a 32-day cycle that's about day 25.

What if my period comes two days after the test?

That's expected; it fits the timing. If the period comes much later than planned, the sample may have been early, and your doctor may ask for a repeat.

Can I take progesterone medicine before the test?

Keep taking it as prescribed and tell us. Your doctor will interpret the result knowing you're on it.

Is this test done in men?

Rarely. It's mainly a test of female ovulation and early pregnancy.
