When doctors order these tests
Each test answers a narrower question than people expect, so doctors tend to combine them.
- RA factor test for swollen small joints of the hands and feet
- Anti-CCP test, the more specific marker for rheumatoid arthritis
- ANA test when lupus or another connective tissue disease is possible
- ASO test for joint pain or kidney problems after a recent strep throat, mostly in children and teenagers
- HLA-B27 test for long-standing inflammatory back pain or recurrent red eye
- IgE test as a broad allergy screen for rhinitis, asthma or eczema
- Arthritis profile test, a panel covering RF, anti-CCP, inflammation markers and uric acid
A positive result in this group is rarely a diagnosis by itself. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms and examination.
Preparation
None of these tests need fasting, and you can come at any time we're open. HLA-B27 is a whole-blood sample with a time limit for processing, so please book it ahead. Anti-CCP, ANA and HLA-B27 are processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test, and usually take 1–3 working days. We'll tell you the expected date when you book.

FAQ
Do I need to fast for arthritis tests?
No. RA factor, anti-CCP, ANA, ASO, HLA-B27 and IgE can all be given after a normal meal.
Which is better for rheumatoid arthritis, RA factor or anti-CCP?
Anti-CCP is more specific, RF is more widely used. Doctors often order both, because together they give a clearer picture.
Can one sample cover several of these tests?
Usually yes for the serum tests. HLA-B27 needs a separate EDTA tube, which we draw at the same time.
Can you collect these at home?
