What the Anti-CCP test checks
The test measures the level of anti-CCP antibodies, usually by ELISA or chemiluminescence, and reports a number in units per mL along with a positive or negative label. Different kits use different cut-offs, so the number on one lab's report can't always be compared directly with another's.
Why your doctor may order it
- new joint pain and swelling, especially in hands and feet, when rheumatoid arthritis is a possibility
- a positive or borderline RA factor test that needs confirming
- a negative RF with symptoms that still look like rheumatoid arthritis
- judging how likely early arthritis is to become persistent or erosive
- people with psoriasis or lupus whose joint symptoms change, to see whether rheumatoid arthritis overlaps
How to prepare
No fasting is needed and there's no best time of day. Eat and drink as normal. Bring your old reports, including any earlier RA factor or X-ray reports, so the doctor can compare.
Sample type and report time
- Sample: serum (red or yellow cap tube)
- Fasting: not needed
- Report: usually 1–3 working days. We'll tell you the expected date when you book.
RA factor, ESR and CRP can be collected at the same visit. Ask on 8872524007 if you're not sure what's been ordered.
Understanding your results
Published studies put the specificity of anti-CCP for rheumatoid arthritis at around 95%, meaning a positive result is rarely seen in people without it. Its sensitivity is lower, about 60 to 70%, so a negative result doesn't exclude the disease. The antibodies can appear years before joint symptoms. A strongly positive level is associated with a higher chance of joint damage over time, which is one reason doctors like to know it early.
The range printed on your report is the one that applies, since cut-offs vary by lab and kit. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms, examination and other tests, including imaging when needed.
FAQ
What's the difference between anti-CCP and RA factor?
Both are antibodies linked with rheumatoid arthritis. RF shows up in many other conditions and in some healthy older adults; anti-CCP is far more specific, so a positive anti-CCP carries more weight.
Do I need to fast for an anti-CCP test?
No. You can eat and drink normally beforehand.
Can I find an anti CCP test near me in Banur rather than going to Chandigarh?
Yes. The sample is drawn at Alpha Laboratory in Banur, or at home through home sample collection. Processing may be at a partner reference laboratory.
If I'm positive, will I definitely get rheumatoid arthritis?
Not definitely. A positive test raises the likelihood, especially with joint symptoms, but only your doctor can judge your overall risk.
