When doctors order these tests
The urine routine test is the everyday one: burning urine, fever without a clear cause, diabetes, pregnancy check-ups and kidney monitoring. When it suggests infection, a urine culture test identifies the bacteria and shows which antibiotics work.
A stool test is ordered for loose motions, stomach pain, blood or mucus in stool, worms, or anaemia in children. Semen analysis checks sperm count, movement and shape when a couple is trying to conceive, and confirms a vasectomy.
Preparation
- Urine: the first morning sample is best. Clean with water, let the first few drops go, and collect the midstream into a sterile container. Give culture samples before starting antibiotics.
- Stool: collect into a clean dry container, a walnut-sized amount, without urine or water mixed in.
- Semen: 2 to 7 days without ejaculation, collected at the lab in a private room.

Yes, in our sterile container. Bring it to the lab within about an hour, or book home collection so we pick it up.
How long does a urine culture take?
Usually 48–72 hours, and longer if bacteria grow and antibiotics are being tested.
Should I avoid testing urine during my period?
If you can, yes. Menstrual blood can make the result look abnormal. Tell us if the test is urgent.
Is semen analysis private?
Yes. The sample is collected in a private room and the report is given only to you.
