Urine Routine & Microscopy test in Banur

A urine routine test, often written as "urine R/M" on a prescription, is one of the quickest ways for a doctor to check on the kidneys, the urinary tract and blood sugar control. It needs no needle, just a small sample in a sterile container. At Alpha Laboratory, Banur, results are usually ready the same day.

The test has three parts: how the urine looks, what a chemical strip picks up, and what the microscope shows. To book, call 8872524007.

What the Urine Routine test checks

Physical examination: colour, clarity (clear or cloudy) and specific gravity, which reflects how concentrated the urine is.

Chemical examination (dipstick): pH, protein, glucose, ketones, bilirubin, urobilinogen, blood, nitrite and leucocyte esterase. Nitrite and leucocyte esterase hint at a bacterial infection.

Microscopy: the sample is spun down and the sediment looked at for pus cells (white cells), red cells, epithelial cells, casts, crystals, yeast and bacteria.

Why your doctor may order it

  • Burning while passing urine, frequent urge, lower belly pain or fever, which suggest a urinary tract infection.
  • Diabetes, to look for sugar, ketones or protein leaking into urine.
  • High blood pressure or kidney disease, where protein and casts matter.
  • Pregnancy check-ups, for protein, sugar and silent infections.
  • Unexplained fever, especially in children and older people.
  • Routine health checks.

If the routine test suggests infection, your doctor may order a urine culture to identify the bacteria and the right antibiotic.

How to prepare

You don't need to fast. The first urine of the morning is best because it's more concentrated, but any sample works if your doctor hasn't said otherwise.

For a clean-catch midstream sample:

  1. Wash your hands and clean the genital area with plain water.
  2. Pass the first few drops into the toilet.
  3. Collect the middle part of the stream in the sterile container, about half full.
  4. Close the lid tightly and hand it in within an hour.

Women should avoid giving a sample during their period if possible, as blood can affect the result. Tell us about any antibiotics already started.

Sample type and report time

Urine in a sterile container that we provide. If it can't come in within an hour, keep it in the fridge (not frozen) for no more than a few hours. Reports are usually ready the same day if the sample reaches us by about 11 am. Elderly patients can use home sample collection; call 8872524007.

Understanding your results

A few pus cells per high-power field are commonly seen in healthy people; many labs treat about 0–5/hpf as usual. More pus cells, plus nitrite or bacteria, may point to infection. Protein can show kidney stress, but also appears after fever or heavy exercise. Glucose often reflects high blood sugar. Many squamous epithelial cells usually mean the sample was contaminated and may need repeating.

The ranges printed on your report are the ones that apply, as they vary by lab and method. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.

FAQ

Is a urine test the same as a urine routine test?

"Urine test" is a general term. The urine routine test is the standard one doctors mean: physical, chemical and microscopic examination together.

Can I bring a sample from home?

Yes, in a sterile container from us or a chemist. Bring it within an hour of collection.

Does drinking lots of water before the test matter?

A lot of water dilutes the urine and can make some results look lower than they are. Drink normally.
