When doctors order these tests
Each marker belongs to a particular situation:
- The PSA test for men with urinary symptoms, a prostate check discussion after 50, or follow-up after prostate treatment.
- The CA 125 test for women with an ovarian cyst or mass on ultrasound, and ovarian cancer follow-up.
- The CEA test, mainly before and after bowel cancer treatment.
- The AFP test for liver cancer surveillance in cirrhosis or hepatitis B, and some testicular and ovarian tumours.
- The CA 19 9 test for pancreatic and bile duct conditions under treatment.
A rising trend across several readings tells a doctor more than one number. Using the same lab each time helps.
Preparation
None of these markers need fasting. A few quirks matter: avoid ejaculation and long cycling for 48 hours before PSA, and mention prostate tablets; book CA-125 after your period if possible; smokers should say so for CEA; tell us about pregnancy for AFP and CA-125, and jaundice or gallstones for CA 19-9. High-dose biotin can affect some methods.
Samples are collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. Reports usually take 1–3 working days; we'll tell you the expected date when you book.
Packages that include them
Our Senior Citizen package includes PSA for men. Other markers are booked separately on a doctor's advice. For prices, call 8872524007.
FAQ
Is there a blood test that checks for all cancers?
No. Tumour markers are specific to certain cancers and aren't reliable for screening people without symptoms.
My marker is slightly high. Does that mean cancer?
Not necessarily. Infections, inflammation, periods, an enlarged prostate, smoking and liver disease can all raise markers. Your doctor decides whether to repeat or investigate.
Do I need a doctor's prescription?
We recommend one, so the right marker is chosen and someone reads the result with you.
Will my report be kept private?
Yes. Reports are shared only with you, or with whoever you ask us to send them to.
