What the AFP test checks
The test reports AFP in ng/mL (some labs use IU/mL). In a non-pregnant adult the level is normally low. It rises when liver cells regenerate quickly, as in hepatitis, or when some tumours produce it, mainly primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) and germ cell tumours.
AFP in pregnancy is a different use. There it's part of maternal screening such as the triple marker and is read against weeks of pregnancy, with a different report format.
Why your doctor may order it
- regular surveillance, often every six months together with an ultrasound, in people with cirrhosis or long-term hepatitis B;
- a liver lump seen on a scan;
- a testicular lump or certain ovarian masses, usually with beta-hCG and LDH;
- follow-up during and after treatment of these tumours, where a falling level is a good sign.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed. Tell us if you are or might be pregnant, because pregnancy raises AFP and changes how the result is read. Mention any high-dose biotin supplement too.
Sample type and report time
We take one serum sample from the arm. The sample is collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. Your report usually takes 1–3 working days; we'll tell you the expected date when you book.
People with liver disease who feel weak can book home sample collection on 8872524007.
Understanding your results
In healthy, non-pregnant adults, many labs quote AFP below about 10 ng/mL. The range printed on your report is the one that applies; ranges vary by lab and method.
A mild rise can be associated with hepatitis, cirrhosis or a liver recovering from injury. Much higher or steadily rising values can be associated with liver cancer or germ cell tumours, and your doctor will arrange scans to find out. Not every liver cancer raises AFP, which is why surveillance pairs it with ultrasound. Your doctor reads it together with your liver tests and imaging.
FAQ
Is AFP a test for liver cancer?
It helps, especially in people at high risk, but it doesn't diagnose liver cancer alone. A scan and sometimes a biopsy are needed.
Why is AFP high in pregnancy?
The baby makes AFP and some crosses into the mother's blood. That's normal and is read using pregnancy-specific ranges.
Where can I get an afp test near me in Banur?
If you're looking for an afp test near me, we collect it at our M.C. Road lab in Banur and at homes in nearby villages.
How often is AFP checked in hepatitis B?
Doctors often check it every six months along with an ultrasound, but your own schedule depends on your liver condition.
