Kidney and electrolyte blood tests in Banur

Your kidneys filter waste from the blood and keep salts and water in balance. A kidney function test measures what the kidneys leave behind in the blood, so a doctor can tell how well that filtering is going. Alpha Laboratory in Banur runs the full panel and each single test on one serum sample, with most results the same day.

When doctors order these tests

Kidney damage is usually silent until it's well advanced. That's why doctors check kidney function routinely in people with diabetes or high blood pressure, the two most common causes of chronic kidney disease in India.

The KFT test is the usual starting point. A doctor may order a single serum creatinine test with eGFR, or a urea test, to follow one value over time. Other common reasons: swelling of the feet or face, reduced urine, long-term use of painkillers or BP tablets, and checks before a CT scan with contrast or surgery.

The salts and minerals have their own uses. An electrolytes test helps after vomiting, diarrhoea or heat exhaustion, and in anyone on water tablets. A uric acid test is ordered for joint pain and gout. The calcium test, phosphorus test and magnesium test are used for bone health, muscle cramps and in long-standing kidney disease.

Preparation

Most of these tests don't need fasting. Eat a normal, light meal and drink your usual amount of water; being dehydrated can push urea and creatinine up.

Skip a heavy meat meal the evening before and stop creatine or protein supplements for a day or two if your doctor agrees, since both raise creatinine. Phosphorus is best measured on a fasting morning sample. Keep taking your usual medicines and bring a list of them.

Packages that include them

Kidney function is part of the Basic Health Check and the Diabetes Care package. The Senior Citizen package adds electrolytes. Details are on health checkup packages.

FAQ

Is KFT the same as RFT?

Yes. Kidney function test (KFT) and renal function test (RFT) are two names for the same panel.

Do I need to fast for a kidney test?

Usually not. Phosphorus is the exception, as a fasting morning sample is preferred. Check your doctor's slip if it's combined with sugar or lipid tests.

How soon are kidney results ready?

Usually the same day if the sample reaches us by about 11 am.

Can kidney tests be done at home?

Yes. Our team collects in Banur and nearby villages daily, and Rajpura, Zirakpur and the Mohali side by appointment.
