What the KFT test checks
Our kidney function test panel covers:
- Blood urea and BUN, a waste product from protein breakdown
- Serum creatinine, a waste product from muscle
- eGFR, an estimate of filtering capacity calculated from creatinine, age and sex
- Uric acid
- Sodium, potassium and chloride (electrolytes)
Some doctors also ask for calcium, phosphorus or the BUN-to-creatinine ratio. Panels differ between labs, so compare like with like if you're tracking old reports.
Why your doctor may order it
- Yearly checks in diabetes or high blood pressure
- Swelling of feet, ankles or around the eyes, or passing less urine
- Monitoring medicines that can affect the kidneys or potassium, such as some BP tablets, water tablets, metformin and regular painkillers
- Before a contrast CT scan or surgery
- Follow-up of known kidney disease, kidney stones or recurrent urine infections
- During severe vomiting, diarrhoea or dehydration
How to prepare
You don't usually need to fast for a KFT test. If it's booked with fasting sugar or a lipid profile, follow the fasting instructions for those.
The evening before, avoid an unusually heavy meat or chicken meal; cooked meat briefly raises creatinine. If you take creatine or high-protein powders at the gym, mention it. Drink your normal amount of water, neither much less nor much more. Keep taking prescribed medicines and bring a list of them.
Sample type and report time
A single tube of blood is drawn into a plain red or yellow serum tube. Results are usually ready the same day when we receive the sample by about 11 am, as a printed copy and a PDF on WhatsApp.
If you're searching for a KFT test near me for someone who can't travel, we collect at home in Banur and nearby villages daily; see home sample collection.
Understanding your results
Doctors read the panel as a whole. A high serum creatinine with a low eGFR suggests reduced filtering. A raised blood urea with normal creatinine more often points to dehydration or a high-protein diet. A high uric acid may relate to gout or diet rather than kidney damage.
International guidance (KDIGO) treats an eGFR below 60 mL/min/1.73 m² lasting three months or more as chronic kidney disease. One abnormal result is usually repeated before conclusions are drawn. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, ranges vary by lab and method, and your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.
FAQ
What is the KFT test price?
The KFT test price depends on how many parameters your doctor wants and whether it's part of a package such as the Basic Health Check. Call or WhatsApp for the current price and today's rate.
Is RFT test the same as KFT?
Yes. RFT (renal function test) and KFT are two names for the same set of kidney measurements.
Do I need to fast for a kidney function test?
Not usually. Eat a normal light meal, but skip a heavy meat dinner the night before.
Does a normal KFT mean my kidneys are perfectly healthy?
Not always. Early kidney damage can show up as protein in the urine before blood values change, so doctors often add a urine test.
