CA-125 test in Banur

The CA-125 test measures a protein found on the surface of cells lining the ovaries, womb, tubes and abdomen. Gynaecologists use it most often to help assess an ovarian cyst or mass seen on ultrasound, and to follow women who have been treated for ovarian cancer. Many common, non-cancer conditions raise it too, so it isn't a screening test for healthy women.

What the CA-125 test checks

CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) is a glycoprotein. Small amounts are in everyone's blood. Levels go up when the lining tissues are irritated, inflamed or growing abnormally. The result is reported in units per millilitre (U/mL).

Why your doctor may order it

  • an ovarian cyst or pelvic mass on ultrasound, often to calculate a risk score along with the scan and menopause status;
  • monitoring response to treatment for ovarian cancer;
  • checking for return of the disease after treatment, where a rising trend matters more than any single number;
  • occasionally, assessing endometriosis or fluid in the abdomen.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. Periods can raise CA-125, so if you still menstruate and the test isn't urgent, try to book it a few days after your period ends rather than during it. Tell us if you're pregnant, since early pregnancy also raises the level.

Very high-dose biotin supplements can affect some immunoassays; mention them when you register.

Sample type and report time

We draw one serum sample from the arm. The sample is collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. You'll usually have the report in 1–3 working days, and we'll tell you the expected date when you book.

Women who'd rather give the sample at home can book home sample collection on 8872524007.

Understanding your results

Many labs use 35 U/mL as the upper limit, though the range printed on your report is the one that applies; ranges vary by lab and method.

A raised CA-125 can be associated with ovarian cancer, but much more often in younger women with endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic infection, periods, pregnancy, liver disease or fluid in the chest or abdomen. A normal result doesn't rule out disease, since some early ovarian cancers don't raise it. Your doctor reads it with your ultrasound, age, menopause status and examination.

FAQ

What is a CA-125 blood test?

It's a blood test for a protein that rises with irritation or abnormal growth of the lining of the ovaries, womb and abdomen. Doctors use it alongside an ultrasound, not on its own.

Should every woman get a CA-125 test?

No. Because so many harmless conditions raise it, it isn't recommended as a routine screening test for women without symptoms. Your doctor advises when it's useful.

Is there a ca 125 test near me in Banur?

Yes. If you're searching for a ca 125 test near me, our lab on M.C. Road, Banur collects it daily, and home collection is available locally.

Why did my CA-125 go up after my period?

Menstruation normally raises CA-125 a little. If the timing wasn't ideal, your doctor may repeat the test later in the cycle.
