What the PCOD Profile test checks
The exact panel varies between doctors and labs, so please ask us what ours includes on the day. A typical pcos blood test panel covers some or all of:
- LH and FSH, for hormone balance in the cycle.
- Testosterone and sometimes DHEA-S, for androgens.
- A prolactin test and TSH, because high prolactin and thyroid problems can cause irregular periods too.
- An AMH test, often high in PCOS.
- Fasting glucose, sometimes with insulin, HbA1c or a lipid profile, because PCOS raises the risk of diabetes and cholesterol problems.
Why your doctor may order it
- Periods that come less often than every 35 days, or not at all.
- Unwanted hair on the face, chest or tummy, or acne that won't settle.
- Weight gain that's hard to shift, or dark velvety skin on the neck.
- Difficulty getting pregnant.
- An ultrasound report that mentions many small follicles.
How to prepare
Plan the visit for day 2 to 5 of your period, so LH and FSH can be read properly. If your periods have stopped, your doctor will tell you to come on any day, usually after ruling out pregnancy.
If glucose, insulin or lipids are on the list, fast overnight for 10 to 12 hours. Water is fine; tea, milk and chewing gum aren't. Come early, between 7 and 10 am, which also suits the testosterone sample. Mention the pill, metformin, DHEA or biotin supplements; don't stop anything without your doctor.
Sample type and report time
Serum tubes for the hormones, plus a grey-top fluoride tube for glucose. Most results are ready the same day or next day. If the list includes AMH or DHEA-S, those parts are processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test, and usually take 1–3 working days. If you're searching for a pcod test near me in Banur, Rajpura or Zirakpur, you can also book home sample collection for an early fasting slot.
Understanding your results
Each test has its own range, and the range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method. In PCOS, testosterone may be mildly raised, LH may be higher than FSH and AMH may be high, but plenty of women with PCOS have normal hormone results. A normal profile doesn't rule PCOS out, and an abnormal one doesn't confirm it. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms, ultrasound and other tests.
FAQ
Can a blood test alone confirm PCOD?
No. Blood results are one part. The diagnosis also depends on your cycle history, symptoms and often an ultrasound.
Is PCOD the same as PCOS?
In India both terms are used for the same condition. Doctors and guidelines use PCOS.
Do I need to fast for the PCOD test?
Only if sugar, insulin or lipids are included. Check your slip, or send it to us on WhatsApp.
My periods are irregular. How do I find day 2?
Count the first day of proper bleeding as day 1. If there's no period for months, ask your doctor which day to come.
