What the FSH test checks
Follicle stimulating hormone comes from the pituitary gland. In women it drives the growth of follicles that hold the eggs. In men it supports sperm production in the testes. The test measures FSH in serum, reported in mIU/mL or IU/L.
The ovaries and testes signal back to the pituitary. When they work less, the pituitary pushes harder and FSH climbs, which is what makes this hormone useful.
Why your doctor may order it
- Trouble conceiving, as part of a baseline fertility check with LH and estradiol.
- Irregular or missed periods.
- Hot flushes and missed periods in the forties, to see if menopause is approaching.
- Early or delayed puberty in a child.
- Low sperm count in men, to tell whether the problem starts in the testes or the pituitary.
How to prepare
No fasting. Note the date your period started and count from there. If your cycles are very irregular or absent, your doctor will tell you to come on a particular day or any day.
Hormonal contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy suppress FSH, so the result may not reflect your natural level. Tell your doctor what you're taking; don't change it without their advice. Let us know about any biotin supplements, which can disturb this type of test.
Sample type and report time
A single serum sample. The report is usually ready the same day or next day. If you're looking for an FSH test near me in Banur, walk in from 7:00 am, or book home sample collection so you don't miss the day-3 window.
Understanding your results
FSH changes through the cycle, peaks just before ovulation and rises a lot after menopause. That's why the day matters. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method, and the lab usually shows separate ranges for each phase.
A raised day-3 FSH can be associated with a lower egg reserve or the run-up to menopause. In men, high FSH with a low sperm count can point to a problem in the testes. Low FSH may be seen with pituitary or hypothalamus problems, heavy exercise, low body weight or high prolactin. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.
FAQ
What if I miss day 2 to 5?
Wait for the next period and come then. A sample on day 10 or 15 is harder to read because FSH moves mid-cycle.
Can FSH confirm menopause?
Not on its own. FSH swings a lot in the years before menopause, and doctors mostly diagnose menopause from your age and periods.
Do men need to come on a particular day?
No. Any morning is fine.
Is FSH the same as an ovulation test?
No. Home ovulation kits detect LH in urine. FSH is a blood test used mainly to look at baseline ovarian or testicular function.
