What the Homocysteine test checks
Homocysteine forms when the body breaks down methionine, an amino acid from protein in food. Normally B12 and folate help recycle it, and B6 helps clear it. When any of these vitamins run low, or the kidneys aren't clearing it well, homocysteine accumulates.
The report gives one figure, in micromoles per litre (µmol/L).
Why your doctor may order it
- a stroke, heart attack or blood clot, particularly at a younger age;
- suspected B12 or folate deficiency, sometimes alongside a vitamin B12 test;
- numbness, tingling or memory problems that may be linked to low B12;
- a family history of early vascular disease, or a known rare inherited condition called homocystinuria;
- as part of a Heart Health package.
How to prepare
Come after an overnight fast of 8 to 12 hours. A protein-rich meal, like eggs, chicken or a big glass of milk, can raise the level for several hours, so a fasting sample gives a steadier reading. Water is fine.
Some medicines affect homocysteine, including metformin, methotrexate, some epilepsy drugs and B-vitamin supplements. Keep taking what your doctor has prescribed and list your tablets when you register. More tips are in the blood test preparation guide.
Sample type and report time
This sample is time-sensitive. Red cells keep releasing homocysteine after the blood is drawn, so the sample has to be spun and separated soon after collection. That's why we prefer you give it at the lab rather than at home; ask us before booking home sample collection for this test.
It's collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. Reports usually take 1–3 working days, and we'll tell you the expected date when you book. Questions: 8872524007.
Understanding your results
Many labs quote a fasting adult range of roughly 5 to 15 µmol/L. Mildly raised values (about 15 to 30) are common, and most often trace back to low B12 or folate, kidney disease, an underactive thyroid, smoking or certain medicines. Values above 100 are rare and point to inherited causes. Your report shows the range for its own method, and ranges vary by lab.
Low homocysteine is rarely a concern. Your doctor reads the figure with your vitamin levels, kidney function and history before deciding anything.
FAQ
Why is homocysteine often high in vegetarians?
Vitamin B12 comes mainly from animal foods. Vegetarians who take little dairy or no supplement can run low on B12, and homocysteine rises as a result.
Can I take my B12 tablet before the test?
Ask your doctor. Supplements lower homocysteine, so the doctor may want a reading before or after starting them.
Is there a homocysteine test near me in Banur?
Yes. Anyone searching for a homocysteine test near me in Banur can give the fasting sample at our M.C. Road lab from 7:00 am.
Does high homocysteine mean I'll have a heart attack?
No. It's one risk marker among many, and your doctor interprets it alongside everything else.
