What the Apolipoprotein test checks
- Apolipoprotein B (ApoB). Every LDL, VLDL and Lp(a) particle carries exactly one ApoB molecule. So ApoB is close to a head count of the particles that can enter artery walls.
- Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1). The main protein of HDL particles, the ones that carry cholesterol away from tissues.
- ApoB/ApoA1 ratio. A single figure that sets the harmful particles against the protective ones. The large INTERHEART study, which included South Asian patients, found this ratio to be a strong marker of heart attack risk.
Why your doctor may order it
Two people can have the same LDL number but very different particle counts. This happens most often with diabetes, belly fat, high triglycerides and insulin resistance, all common in Punjab. Here LDL may look acceptable while ApoB is high.
Doctors may also use ApoB to track treatment, or when triglycerides are too high for the usual LDL calculation to be trusted.
How to prepare
ApoB and ApoA1 themselves change little after a meal. In practice the test is almost always done alongside a lipid profile, which does need fasting. So come after an overnight fast of 10 to 12 hours, drinking only water.
Keep taking your usual medicines, and mention any cholesterol or thyroid tablets when you register. The blood test preparation guide covers the fasting rules.
Sample type and report time
We draw one serum sample from the arm. It is collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. Expect the report in usually 1–3 working days; we'll tell you the expected date when you book.
For older relatives who can't travel, ask about home sample collection on 8872524007.
Understanding your results
Higher ApoB means more cholesterol-carrying particles in circulation. Several guidelines regard ApoB above roughly 130 mg/dL as raised, and lower targets are set for people already at high risk. Low ApoA1 tends to track with low HDL. A higher ApoB/ApoA1 ratio points to higher risk. The range printed on your report is the one that applies; ranges vary by lab and method.
High ApoB can be associated with diet, diabetes, an underactive thyroid, kidney disease or inherited lipid disorders. Your doctor reads it alongside your full lipid report, sugar and blood pressure.
FAQ
Is ApoB better than LDL?
It adds information rather than replacing LDL. ApoB is most useful when LDL and the particle count may disagree, such as in diabetes or high triglycerides.
Can I get only ApoB without ApoA1?
Yes, if your doctor writes only ApoB. Tell us when you book so we request the right test.
Is there an apolipoprotein test near me in Banur?
Our lab on M.C. Road collects it. People searching for an apolipoprotein test near me from Rajpura or Zirakpur can also book home collection by appointment.
Will the result change my treatment?
That decision belongs to your doctor, who looks at all your results and risk factors together.
