At Alpha Laboratory, Banur, the HCV test is a single blood sample with no fasting, and the result is given only to you. Call 8872524007 to book.
What the HCV test checks
The test detects antibodies to the hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV). These antibodies usually appear around 8 to 12 weeks after infection, sometimes later.
One important point: antibodies stay in the blood even after the virus has gone, whether the body cleared it naturally or treatment cured it. So a positive anti-HCV shows exposure at some point, not necessarily active infection. A second test, HCV RNA (viral load), tells whether the virus is still there.
Why your doctor may order it
Hepatitis C spreads mainly through blood. Doctors suggest testing for:
- Raised liver enzymes (SGPT/SGOT) or signs of liver disease.
- Past injections or drips with reused needles, blood transfusions before screening became routine, or dental and surgical procedures in poorly sterilised settings.
- Anyone who has ever injected drugs, even once.
- Dialysis patients, people with HIV, and before surgery or in pregnancy.
- Tattoos or piercings done with unsterile equipment.
It doesn't spread through food, water, sharing utensils or casual contact.
How to prepare
No fasting and no preparation. Bring previous liver tests or any earlier hepatitis report. If you've been treated for hepatitis C before, tell your doctor, as the antibody result will likely stay positive and an RNA test is more useful.
Sample type and report time
A blood sample from the arm, in a plain or gel tube for serum. The report is usually ready the same day if the sample reaches us by about 11 am, and it's released only to the patient. For a private home visit, use home sample collection or call 8872524007.
Understanding your results
- Non-reactive: no hepatitis C antibodies found. If a recent exposure happened in the last three months, a repeat may be advised.
- Reactive: you've been exposed to hepatitis C. A rapid card result is normally confirmed by a lab method, and your doctor will order HCV RNA to check for current infection, plus liver tests.
A reactive result is not something to panic about. Current treatments cure the large majority of patients, and free testing and treatment are available through government hospitals under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme. Your doctor will explain the next steps.
FAQ
Is the anti-HCV test the same as a hepatitis C test?
It's the standard hepatitis C test for screening. If it's reactive, the HCV RNA test confirms whether the virus is active.
Can I be positive after I've been cured?
Yes. Anti-HCV antibodies usually stay for life. Your doctor will use HCV RNA, not antibodies, to confirm cure.
Is there a vaccine for hepatitis C?
No, unlike hepatitis B. Avoiding shared needles, razors and unsterile procedures is the main protection.
