D-Dimer test in Banur

When a blood clot forms and then starts to break down, it releases small protein pieces called D-dimers. A D-dimer test measures them in your plasma. Its main strength is in ruling things out: a normal result makes a significant clot unlikely in a person whom the doctor already thinks is at low risk.

If you have sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or one leg that is suddenly swollen, hot and painful, go to the nearest emergency department now. A lab test is not a substitute for urgent care. For a planned test, call 8872524007.

What the D-Dimer test checks

D-dimer is a fragment of cross-linked fibrin, the mesh that holds a clot together. It only appears once the body's clot-dissolving system (fibrinolysis) has acted on a real clot. Labs measure it with an immunoassay, usually latex-based, and report it in ng/mL or µg/mL FEU (fibrinogen-equivalent units).

Why your doctor may order it

  • suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the leg
  • suspected pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs)
  • as one of several tests in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
  • monitoring some hospital patients, including during severe infections; it was widely used during COVID-19

Doctors usually combine the D-dimer test with a clinical score. If the score is low and D-dimer is normal, a scan may not be needed. If the score is high, they'll often go straight to an ultrasound or CT scan.

How to prepare

No fasting needed. Tell us if you are pregnant, had surgery or an injury in the past few weeks, or take a blood thinner, because all of these affect how the result is read. Being on anticoagulants can lower the level.

Sample type and report time

The sample is drawn into a light-blue citrate tube, filled to the line, and separated to plasma. Results are usually available the same day for samples in by 11 am. If your doctor needs the result urgently, phone before you come so we can tell you the quickest option. Home collection is possible for planned, non-urgent follow-up tests.

Understanding your results

A common cut-off is 500 ng/mL FEU (0.5 µg/mL FEU). For people over 50, many guidelines use an age-adjusted cut-off of age × 10 ng/mL FEU. The cut-off printed on your report is the one that applies, as units and methods vary between labs.

A raised D-dimer can be associated with DVT, pulmonary embolism and DIC. It also rises in many other situations: pregnancy, recent surgery, injury, infection, cancer, liver disease and simply getting older. That's why a high result is not a diagnosis of a clot. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests, often including imaging.

FAQ

Does a high D-dimer mean I have a clot?

Not necessarily. Many conditions raise it, so a high result usually leads to more tests, such as a Doppler scan.

Is a normal D-dimer always reassuring?

It's most reliable when the doctor's clinical suspicion is low. With high suspicion, doctors may scan anyway.

Where can I get a D-dimer test near me in Banur?

If you are looking for a D dimer test near me in Banur, Alpha Laboratory on M.C. Road collects the sample. For anything urgent, go to a hospital emergency department.

Why is D-dimer higher in pregnancy?

Clotting and clot breakdown are both more active in pregnancy. Labs and doctors take this into account.
