What the TSH test checks
Think of TSH as a thermostat reading. When thyroid hormone is low, the pituitary turns TSH up to push the gland harder. When thyroid hormone is high, TSH is turned down, sometimes to almost nothing.
The lab measures it with an immunoassay and reports it in mIU/L (some reports write µIU/mL, which is the same number).
Why your doctor may order it
TSH alone is the usual screening test for people with vague symptoms such as tiredness, weight change or low mood, and for those at higher risk: women over 35, people with diabetes or a family history, and anyone with high cholesterol.
It's also the main test for adjusting thyroid tablets. Once the dose is right, most doctors follow treatment with TSH alone, perhaps once or twice a year. In pregnancy, doctors check it early because needs change quickly.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed. TSH follows a daily rhythm and is highest late at night and early morning, so try to give the sample at a similar time on each visit; that makes comparisons fairer.
If you are on thyroid tablets, keep taking them and ask your doctor about timing on the test day. Biotin can make a TSH read falsely low on many machines. If you take it in a supplement, ask your doctor whether to pause it for a couple of days before the test.
Sample type and report time
Blood is taken from an arm vein into a serum tube (red or yellow cap). The report is usually ready the same day if we have the sample by about 11 am. Regular follow-up checks can be done through home sample collection.
Understanding your results
A typical adult TSH range is about 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L, though it varies by lab and many labs use lower upper limits in pregnancy. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method.
A high TSH can be associated with an underactive thyroid, most often from Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or with a dose that is too low. A low TSH can be associated with an overactive thyroid, too high a dose, or early pregnancy. Recovery from a serious illness and some medicines, such as steroids, can shift TSH temporarily.
If TSH is outside the range, doctors usually check free T4 next, or the full thyroid profile. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other tests.
FAQ
Is the TSH test enough on its own?
For screening and for following a stable dose, often yes. If it is abnormal, your doctor will usually add free T4 or a full profile.
Where can I get a TSH test near me in Banur?
If you're searching for a TSH test near me in Banur, our lab is on M.C. Road, open from 7 am Monday to Saturday and until 1 pm on Sunday.
Can I eat before a TSH test?
Yes. Food doesn't affect TSH meaningfully.
Why does my TSH change between tests?
Time of day, recent illness, biotin and dose changes all play a part. Doctors look at the trend over time.
