What the Diabetes Profile test checks
Our Diabetes Care profile currently includes:
- Fasting blood sugar test (FBS)
- PPBS test, two hours after breakfast
- HbA1c, the two-to-three-month average
- Kidney function test (urea, creatinine, uric acid, electrolytes)
- Urine routine, which picks up sugar, protein and infection
- Lipid profile (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL)
Doctors sometimes add a urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, a more sensitive early kidney check. Tell us if it's on your slip.
Why your doctor may order it
Diabetes control isn't only about one sugar number. Over time, high glucose can strain the small blood vessels in the kidneys and raise heart risk, often without symptoms. A profile lets the doctor see sugar control, kidney health and cholesterol together and adjust treatment in one consultation.
It's commonly ordered at diagnosis, then every three to six months while treatment is being fine-tuned, and at least once a year when things are stable.
How to prepare
- Fast overnight, 10 to 12 hours, water only. This covers both the sugar and the lipid tests.
- Come in early, between 7:00 and 8:30 am, and pass a urine sample at the lab into the sterile container we hand you.
- Give the fasting blood and urine samples.
- Eat your normal breakfast nearby and note the time you start.
- Return for the PPBS sample at the two-hour mark.
Ask your doctor how to time your diabetes tablets or insulin around breakfast that day. Our blood test preparation guide has more on fasting.
Sample type and report time
Expect two blood draws: the fasting one fills a grey fluoride tube for sugar, a purple EDTA tube for HbA1c and a serum tube for the kidney and lipid tests, then a second grey tube after breakfast. Plus one urine sample. Results are usually ready the same day when samples are in by about 11 am, all on one printed report and a WhatsApp PDF.
If you're looking for a diabetes profile test near me without two trips, our team can collect at home; see home sample collection.
Understanding your results
Each part has its own range. For sugar, the American Diabetes Association uses fasting glucose 100 and 126 mg/dL and HbA1c 5.7% and 6.5% as key thresholds. Kidney and lipid values are read against the ranges on the report.
Doctors look at patterns: rising HbA1c with steady fasting values, a creeping creatinine, protein in the urine, or high triglycerides. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, ranges vary by lab and method, and your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.
FAQ
How long does the diabetes profile take?
Plan for about two and a half hours on the morning, because of the PPBS sample after breakfast. You can wait at home if you live nearby.
Is this the same as the Diabetes Care package?
Yes, the Diabetes Profile and Diabetes Care package cover the same tests. See health checkup packages for other options.
Can tests be added or removed?
Yes. If your doctor wants something extra, such as insulin or a urine albumin test, bring the slip and we'll add it.
Do I need to stop my diabetes medicine?
No, don't stop it on your own. Ask your doctor how to time the dose around the fasting and after-meal samples.
